KURE BEACH, NC (WWAY) -- Monday ushers in the unofficial start of the fall fishing season and there are new rules and regulation that could end your season early if your not aware.
Marine Patrol Officials say the biggest change that fishermen will see starting Monday is in the way license suspensions are enforced.
Two violations, and your license will now be suspended for 30 days. Four violations, and you won't be able to set a line for at least one year.
Rules and regulations vary from fish to fish.
"We're constantly checking seven days a week, 24 hours a day," said Michael Ervin of the Marine Patrol. "We're looking for people that may be violating the law or those that are not."
Officials say the best way to learn about the new rules is to obtain a copy from your local pier house or bait shop.
